TOPICS ON OSHA:
OSHA REGULATIONS FOR THE PHYSICIAN OFFICE
This 3.5 hour seminar covers four OSHA regulations that affect all physician offices. In 1992, 90% of offices that were fined by OSHA, were fined for violations other than the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard. It is important for physician to be aware of ALL standards that they should be in compliance with. The new regulations concerning Tuberculosis will be covered. This detailed seminar will help any office better understand how to meet OSHA standards and be prepared for an OSHA inspection.
OSHA'S "DIRTY DOZEN"
This seminar covers the 12 most common OSHA violations in physician offices. It is based on Ms. Voldish's articles on this topic which has been published in over 10 medical journals.Point of care consults has performed over 1,500 OSHA evaluations and the findings were compiled for this seminar. Find out now if you are guilty of non-compliance! (2 HOURS) * Also available as a self-study program
OSHA SAFETY TRAINING

This seminar gives participants important safety information to protect them from possible on-the-job exposure accidents. One of our most popular seminars!
TUBERCULOSIS GUIDELINES: - INFECTION CONTROL FOR THE PHYSICIAN OFFICE
Tuberculosis (TB) is a growing problem throughout the country. OSHA and the CDC have released guidelines for medical facilities and exposure control. This seminar goes over the disease, current statistics, recommendations and how to classify the office. Once this classification is made - a chart for what is needed in each office is provided and reviewed. Every office needs to comply with these guidelines! (1.5 hour seminar)
IS YOUR OSHA PROGRAM UP TO DATE?

Offices will learn what areas of OSHA compliance need attention in their work place. (2 hr. seminar)
LETS TALK TRASH! - MEDICAL WASTE REGULATIONS
N.J. and Florida inspect offices for compliance with state medical waste laws about every 2 years. The fines are staggering if the office is not keeping the proper documentation or if they are not in compliance with the standard. This is a great opportunity for offices to ask the questions they are often afraid to ask the DEP! This seminar is 1.5 hours. (given in N.J. only)
OSHA INSPECTIONS
More offices than you think are inspected due to employee and patient complaint! This seminar reviews the ways complaints are filed and how OSHA responds to the complaints, what to expect when OSHA comes knocking on your door. (1.5 hour) * This program also available as a self-study program

Session is full day (7.5 hr.). The presentation is given with 35 mm slides and extensive handouts. The program covers the fundamentals of safety regulations. Participants will work with customized OSHA manuals. Checklists are provided to help them evaluate their own office. Ample time is given for questions and answers. Offices can now learn how present their own OSHA safety training programs using the information and handouts provided. By understanding the regulations the office representative will easily be able to implement policies! This program is presently offered by Rutgers University as part of their Medical Managers Program. AMTIE or Florida continuing education contact hours are awarded at completion of this program. Students must purchase our Safety Manual ($150 - $15 discount) and a per student fee of $150 is charged that includes training cards and self-evaluation checklists so participant can perform a complete evaluation of facility. Fee for additional student from same office (no manuals) is $100. Class size should be limited.
"ERGONOMICS AND SAFETY POLICIES FOR THE OFFICE STAFF”
Workman's compensation claims for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) from prolonged and incorrect computer use, is the fastest growing job related health problem. Back problems are the number one claim for health care workers according to OSHA reports. OSHA has released a proposed ergonomic standard and although a final standard has not been published, OSHA has stated that inspection for compliance can be performed under OSHA's "general duty clause". It is imperative that offices start addressing these safety issues and provide the office staff with information. Putting policies in place and making the necessary changes will reduce future claims for injuries. This program will provide information on the many office safety regulations and recommendations that are often overlooked. Offices usually focus on "Bloodborne Pathogen" safety for the medical staff - this program addresses safety for the "non-medical" staff. 2.5 hour presentation
SAFETY HOT TOPICS
This program is continually updated to reflect the most current changes to the regulations. Safety focus on latex irritation, workplace violence, ergonomics, current disease trends and other hot topics of compliance covered in the newest OSHA guidelines, recommendations and regulations. A brief review of existing OSHA regulations is given to help offices check their current program. 2 hour presentation
SAFETY NEEDLES
The Bloodborne Pathogen Standard was revised on January 18, 2001 to include the use of safety needles and safety devices. The regulation went into effect on April 18, 2001. This program reviews the new standard and supplies all the logs and forms you need to get into compliance fast. 1.5 contact hours * This program also available as a self-study program
WORKPLACE VIOLENCE
OSHA published a fact sheet addressing workplace violence in 2002. Workplace violence can happen anywhere - no one is immune. Hospitals, home care services and physician offices are at risk. Learn how to recognize t, avoid, and diffuse potential problems before they escalate. (1 hour presentation)
MRSA - WHAT EVERY OFFICE NEEDS TO KNOW
The most potent antibiotics are no longer a match for many drug-resistant bacteria’s. Why? When antibiotics are given the body has the ability to adapt. Most bacteria is killed by the antibiotics but others have the ability to resist and mutate. This mutation gives the bacteria the ability to overcome the antibiotic. Although the majority of MRSA infections occur among patients in hospitals or other healthcare settings, it is becoming more common in the community setting. Community based MRSA accounts for about 12% of diagnosed infections. Most offices are seeing patients that have contracted MRSA infections. Learn more about this serious infection. ( 1 hour presentation)
TOPIC ON OFFICE MANAGEMENT:
EMPLOYEE HANDBOOKS
Many offices hire and have no written guidelines. Without policies there can be misinterpretation of job duties, benefits, raises, vacations, health insurance, hours, etc. Most of these problems can be avoided if policies are clearly written and given to the employee at the time of hire. A policy manual serves as a documented reference for both the office manager and the employees. Key areas that should be addressed in an employee policy manual will be outlined. An employee handbook - ready to personalize - is available through POC. (1.5 hour presentation)
HIPAA - 10 STEPS TO COMPLIANCE
Can compliance with HIPAA be that easy? Sure! Law firms want to make you think it is far more complicated than it is. Let POC walk you through it step by step. Compliance with the record keeping, privacy, security and electronic transmission will be covered. HIPAA policy manual may be purchased separately if desired. (2 hour presentation)
INTRODUCTION TO NEGOTIATING MANAGED CARE CONTRACTS
Most physician practices contract with one or more managed care organization. Managed care contracts are written by managed care lawyers for the companies benefit. Physician must start questioning contracts and negotiate better deals Ninety percent (90%) of physicians accept the terms and sign managed care contracts without asking question - losing the revenue they once had from in-house testing and other diagnostic medical tests. The 10% of offices that do negotiate contracts for reimbursement for diagnostic testing usually get concessions! Learn how to prepare for negotiations and get your fair share! (3 hour presentation - this program is priced per student) * This program is also available as a self study program.
TOPICS ON OFFICE LABORATORIES:
CLIA REGULATIONS FOR THE PHYSICIAN OFFICE LABORATORY
This 3.5 hour seminar covers the basic components of meeting the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) regulations. Personnel standards, testing levels, quality assurance, quality control, procedure manuals, proficiency testing and record keeping are just a few of the areas that will be covered. Comprehensive handouts for regulatory guidance are supplied.
CLIA INSPECTIONS - THE 12 MOST COMMON VIOLATIONS
This seminar will review the 12 most common areas of non-compliance when offices are inspected for CLIA certification. Each topic contains information on what is needed to correct the problem.Point of care consultshas evaluated over 400 office laboratories and this seminar reflects the findings. Ms. Voldish's article on this subject has been published in 4 medical journals. (1.5 - 2 hour)
WAIVED TESTS - THEY’RE NOT FOOLPROOF
This program examines the history of Waived/PPM CLIA regulations, lists the pro’s and con’s of performing simple tests, identifies the original list of tests and new tests that have been added, explains what is meant by “good laboratory practice” and identifies area’s of testing that can either make the test accurate or compromise the test result. This program runs 2 hours. Area’s of compliance can be added to make this test 3 hours.
SPECIMEN COLLECTION 101

This is an excellent review! (allow 3 hours - unless topics are broken down). * Program is also available as a self-study program.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
ALL offices - from waived to high complexity should follow quality assurance (QA) policies to monitor the testing process. HCFA has stressed that the second round of inspection will focus more on quality assurance documentation. How do you develop a QA plan? What do inspectors want to see? An effective QA plan includes the pre-analytical process, patient test management, testing, quality control, instrument and environment maintenance and post-testing policies. An extensive QA plan with forms and checklists is provided to all participants to customize to their testing needs. A per student charge of $35 for handouts is required. (2.5 hours)
HOW TO ACE PROFICIENCY TESTING
All physician offices were to be enrolled in an approved proficiency testing (PT) program for all moderate and high complexity testes they perform in-house as of January 1994. As of 1995 there are sanctions for failure. This seminar goes over how to choose a PT company that best serves your needs, record keeping, rules for performing PT and how to investigate PT failure. Handouts are from Ms. Voldish's article "PT - Now it is a Reality". (1.5 hour)
SELECTING A HEMATOLOGY OR CHEMISTRY INSTRUMENT FOR THE OFFICE
Physicians often make poor decisions when selecting instrumentation for the office. This seminar gives a check list of questions every physician should ask a sales person BEFORE signing on the dotted line! How to perform a realistic cost evaluation and options on purchasing will be covered. If the audience is large - some equipment can be brought in to view and talk with company representatives. (This seminar is only 1.5 hours when given in combination with the CLIA Regulation seminar)
UNDERSTANDING COMMON LAB RESULTS
This seminar is geared to the staff of the physician. Often the people working in the physician office are not experienced nurses and medical personnel. This seminar goes over what "high" and "low" results mean for some of the most common tests performed in the office. Knowing this information will make reading lab reports and understanding how they relate to medical conditions more interesting. (1.5 hour) * This program is also available as a self-study program.
THROAT CULTURES AND URINE CULTURES
Throat and Urine cultures are performed routinely in many physician offices. Cultures require skill and knowledge of the tester and quality control documentation. This seminar is an excellent review of "good laboratory technique". Charts to record controls are part of the handouts. Seminar will cover rapid and blood plate strep, urine culture paddle tests (colony counts & identification) and antibiotic sensitivities.
